The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Cynthia Mamle Morrison, has revealed that the Ministry is targeting two million men and boys as advocates for the “Him-for-her” campaign in Ghana.

He noted that the role of men and boys in the ‘Him-for-her’ campaign was critical to ensuring a just society, where the concerns of women and men were an integral part of development.

Ms Morrison, who revealed this in a speech read on her behalf by Ms Thywill Eyra Kpe, Acting National Gender Director at a one-day awareness meeting on the ‘He-for-her’ campaign in Wa, noted that currently 2,445 people had signed up to the movement.

“For Ghana to achieve gender equality and also meet the stated goal of two million, we must work together to create an enabling environment where men and boys will rise in support of women and girls,” he said.

Ms Morrison pointed out, therefore, that the objective of the campaign was to promote the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal five (SDG 5), which aimed to achieve gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls.

The Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, therefore, encouraged all Ghanaian men and boys to sign up for the ‘He-For-She’ platform to enable the country to achieve its goal.

She said in addition to the campaign; Ghana had carried out a number of gender positive initiatives, noting that in 2019, the Ministry involved a total of 5,564 men and boys and a total of 4,511 men and boys in the southern sector in the final quarters of 2020.

They were sensitized about gender equality specifically in the eradication of child marriage, sexual and gender violence, unpaid care work and equal opportunities for all, among others, ”Ms. Morrison emphasized.

Dr. Hafiz Bin Salih, Regional Minister of the Upper West, in a speech read on his behalf by Ms. Fati Koray, Deputy Director of the Regional Coordination Council (RCC), noted that the data had shown that the majority of violence it was perpetrated by men and boys. and largely against women and girls.

He said that men therefore had a crucial role to play as parents, friends, decision makers and opinion leaders in the fight against violence and the promotion of the rights of all people, particularly women and girls. girls, and ensuring that attention is paid to gender issues. he deserved it.

Dr. Jane Lobnibe, SD Dombo University Professor of Business Studies and Integrated Development, discouraged the tendency to look down on men who perpetrate gender-based violence, but instead adopted the strategy of working with them to change their attitude.

He also urged men to economically empower their women, adding that if women were empowered it would help create a better society for all.

Ms Charity Batuure, Regional Director of the Gender Department, said after the meeting that they would continue to engage traditional authorities and their communities to inspire men to stand up and support the ‘Him-for-her’ campaign.

The ‘He-For-She’, which is the first of its kind by the United Nations (UN) to push as many men and boys as possible to be advocates of gender equality, had seen around 2.2 since its launch on September 20, 2014. millions of people committed to the campaign worldwide.

The government of Ghana, since December 12, 2017, launched the national campaign as part of the UN global agenda to ensure the effective participation of men in the campaign for gender equality, equity and the empowerment of women and girls.
