The daughter of the former president of Ivory Coast, Marie-Patrice Gbagbo, has revealed that her father, Laurent Gbagbo, had a great love for humanity.
According to her, her father had that passion that always drove him to fight for the best interest of his people.
“Dad came from a very poor background and what he wanted was for all Ivorians to have that platform where everyone can prosper. Therefore, he was fighting for strong institutions to keep the constitution up.
“He said one day that what he wants is for people to recognize that when Blackman dies, a man has died,” he said.
The comment comes a day after the International Criminal Court (ICC) confirmed Mr. Gbagbo’s acquittal on charges of crimes against humanity.
The former leader of the Ivory Coast was arrested and later charged after his refusal to resign after losing an election.
He had been accused of violence after the disputed 2010 elections that left 3,000 dead.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Friday, years after the incident, Marie-Patrice Gbagbo revealed that her father’s arrest and all the charges brought against him came to her family as a shock.
She told host Benjamin Akakpo that it took a while for the family to accept the arrest, as her father had always loved peace.
“Gbagbo Laurent is a man of peace, he has a vision of Africa that even transcends that of the Ivory Coast. He said one day that what he wants is for people to recognize that when Blackman dies, a man has passed by. We are not less than the others. “
“Obviously, when you face fights like this, you will face opposition, but it is part of the journey. He was a man who wanted to reconcile people and that is why he went around the world trying to defend the position of the Ivory Coast ”.
Marie further revealed that some members of her family came to Ghana seeking refuge after her father’s arrest.
“We’ve been here working, taking the kids to school, coming back, going to church … Just doing our thing.”
“Like I said, drawing lessons. Many lessons. It has been a challenge. But we survived. We survived it. We got stronger. We are happy. It couldn’t break us. “
