Gary Neville has urged Ole Gunnar Solskjaer not to “panic” in the January transfer window, citing Manchester United’s excellent form as cause for optimism.

The Red Devils have won three of their four games since being knocked out of the Champions League with a loss to RB Leipzig earlier this month.

These victories include a 6-2 beating over Leeds and a 2-0 win over Everton that secured progression to the Carabao Cup semi-finals.

United are third in the Premier League with one game less than those above them and the mood at Old Trafford is significantly better at the moment compared to earlier in the season.

As such, Neville cautioned Solskjaer not to upset the balance with a poorly judged draft.

When asked if the United manager should think carefully about who to sign in January, the expert said: “If the right player is there, they are, because they need to improve the team.”

“But if it’s not there, I wouldn’t panic. They won’t panic because they’ve been doing a little better in the last few years.

“They are a confusing group because three or four weeks ago, two weeks ago, the eve, you were looking at Manchester United and you thought it was going to be a tough old season.

“Coming out of Europe, the performance in the first half against West Ham was terrible. But after beating Everton, the glass seems half full.

“The squad has been used, the performance against Leeds, they are scoring goals, the depth of the squad looks good. Leicester is another great game, if they go there and win, they will really be building confidence.”

“For three weeks, there was a point where I thought this would be a real challenge. But I think right now the fans will be happy because the players have a lot of quality.

“If they can get into the groove and start churning out performances of over 90 minutes consistently, that group of players … there are some big characters and great talents there. It’s getting better and they’re stronger and they have game winners.”
