Boss José Mourinho’s team is close to bringing Bale back to the Premier League, and the 31-year-old prefers a return from Tottenham to Manchester United interest.

And Bale’s agent, Jonathan Barnett, confirmed he was on fire when he said last night: “Gareth still loves the Spurs. We are talking. It’s where you want to be. “

The Spurs see Bale as one of their own despite his departure for Real in 2013, for a world record fee of £ 86 million.

Bale sent a request to Premier League clubs to end their hell in Madrid less than a fortnight ago after Zinedine Zidane froze him.

He even accused the Spanish giants of blocking a move to China at 11 a.m. last summer.

Spurs president Daniel Levy is desperate to make the deal a reality, and SunSport understands that a deal was struck last night for Bale to return.

Levy estimates that a second comeback at Spurs for Bale would help appease the club’s fans and ease the sadness that has descended since Sunday’s 1-0 loss to Everton.

After the home loss, Mourinho expressed his wish, and also seemed confident that it would happen, to sign a forward to ease the burden on Harry Kane.

United also wanted Bale as a possible transfer target, should they fail to sign Jadon Sancho.

The Real is keen to take Bale out of the payroll but is willing to continue paying up to 50 per cent of his staggering £ 650,000 weekly salary.

Bale, whose contract with the Bernabéu expires in the summer of 2022, won four Champions League titles with the champions of Spain, but has played just 100 minutes since soccer resumed in June.

He led Wales in two Nations League victories over Finland and Bulgaria and his fitness improved in the latter, completing 90 minutes for the first time since January.

Spurs also have their new £ 1bn stadium to pay for and that has so far restricted their activity in this transfer window to two £ 15m signings in midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and defender Matt Doherty, plus a free keeper Joe Hart.

But the addition of Bale, who scored 55 goals in 203 appearances after signing from Southampton for £ 7m in 2007, would undoubtedly add goals to the Tottenham team.

Bale hailed the Special One in December. He said: “Mourinho, there is an incredible statement, he is a serial winner.”

Spurs also appropriated United’s contract for Madrid side Sergio Reguilón.

The 23-year-old, who spent last season on loan at Sevilla, exceeds the requirements at the Bernabéu and United were in negotiations with the Spaniard last week for a £ 20 million deal.

But after United did not agree to a buyback clause, Spurs are close to signing the left-back permanently.
