On the return from the launch of the Galaxy S20, we put a rare hint of praise on Samsung’s upgrade support for its line of Galaxy phones. While everyone’s fake outrage was booming over the $ 1,000 S20 just by watching Android version updates for two years, we remind everyone that they were actually supporting their phones longer than Google.
One of the phones that we specifically called was Galaxy S8, a phone approaching on its third anniversary, but still seeing monthly security patches. We suggest at that time that it could soon drop from the monthly category to the quarterly update category. That happened today.
With the Galaxy S7 reaching the 4-year mark last month and ceasing to offer continued support, the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 + have now taken their place on the quarterly list. First released in late April 2017, the Galaxy S8 / S8 + and its owners should no longer expect monthly updates.
Don’t you think Samsung was still updating the Galaxy S8 every month with new security patches? Look at the Verizon support page to see it – you’ll see an update as recent as March 23, along with updates in February and January this year.
Again, we sure want Samsung to find a way to include one more Android version update on their super-expensive Galaxy phones (like Android 10 on the S8), but they still deserve credit for 4-year support than anyone else. More outside Apple is offering.
