David Tamakloe is the editor of WhatsApp News
South Dayi Member of Parliament of the Democratic National Congress (NDC), Mr. Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, is pleading with the police to release WhatsApp News editor David Tamakloe, who is said to have been arrested and detained on Thursday.
The deputy, who is also a member of the Committee on Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, calls for his release so that Tamakloe can celebrate Easter with his family.
According to the MP, Tamakloe was picked up at gunpoint and sent to a yet-to-be-identified police station by plainclothes security men.
The basis for the arrest is unclear, he said in a press release issued on Friday, April 2, 2021.
The NDC lawmaker lamented what he said was the government’s use of state security agencies to take out critical media.
“It is a surprise that nothing seems to be changing in this regard. It was reported that Mr. Tamakloe was detained at gunpoint sometime yesterday. And particularly, on the eve of Good Friday, knowing very well that he would be kept in police custody until after Monday, is most inhumane, unacceptable, backward and smells of abuse of police powers.
“A colleague lawyer, who followed up on the matter at the police station, related how the officers could not explain the reasons for their arrest. Simply none and yet the police investigation has been denied [bail] deliberately, ”he said.
He highlighted: “It is important that our security operates on the basis of transparency and with a certain sense of integrity. The image of security agencies continues to decline over the years following the arbitrary and inexplicable arrests of innocent citizens.
“The state should not be considered to be spending its powers arbitrarily. The state, instead of abusing its powers, is expected to protect the rights and freedoms of its citizens. The consistent acts of picking up individuals without cause must now cease. The rule of law does not mean the rule of a few. It means acting in accordance with our laws and not in accordance with our whims and whims.
“In this statement, I urge the IGP to order that Mr. Tamakloe be released on bail for a police investigation so that he can meet with his family at Easter and that if any prima facie determination is made after the weekly festivities Santa, may you be duly prosecuted in court. so he would take measures to defend himself in the matter ”.

DAVID TAMAKLOE FREE TO CELEBRATE EASTER WITH YOUR FAMILY
Yesterday it emerged that Mr. David Tamakloe was arrested by some unidentified security officers allegedly from Homeland Security.
The Rambo-style approach to arresting citizens has been of concern to many.

Sacrificing professionalism at the altar of political expediency and making security a tool for political manipulation would do everyone a lot of harm.
Mr. David Tamakloe, the editor of Whatsapp News was similarly arrested a couple of months ago without justification.
The state should not be seen as wasting its powers arbitrarily. The state, instead of abusing its powers, is expected to protect the rights and freedoms of its citizens. The consistent acts of picking up individuals without cause must now cease. The rule of law does not mean the rule of a few. In this statement, I urge the IGP to order that Mr. Tamakloe be released on bail for police investigation so that he can be reunited with his family at Easter and that if any prima facie determination is made after the Easter festivities , can be duly prosecuted in court to take steps to defend yourself in the matter.
