According to former Arsenal player and interim coach Freddie Ljungberg, Mesut Ozil should be on Arsenal’s team this season.
Ozil was left out of Arsenal’s Premier League and Europa League teams this season and it seems unlikely that the German midfielder will play for the club again.
When asked for his opinion on Ozil’s situation at Arsenal, Ljungberg said:
“Mesut is a great footballer, we know that. We all have different opinions and everyone must accept that people have different opinions. For me, maybe because of the way football has gone now, sometimes it’s not so athletic on defense. Let’s say when you play Man City you don’t have the ball and you just need to run after them, maybe you need more athletic players. “
“What I tried to do, what I believed in, was that when you play against teams that, on paper, are a bigger club than or you think they will have a low lock and need someone to unlock it, Mesut has the total quality to to do that. I think there is a space for a player like that in those kinds of games ”.
“But you also need to have communication with the player, not only with Mesut, with all the players. Different games are adapted to certain players and other games are adapted to others. “
“The days of playing every minute of every game may not happen so often anymore. When I left in the summer he was in the squads and now he’s not. What happened there, I can’t answer. “
“I don’t know if something else happened, I have no idea. But if you look at the qualities of pure football, I think my answer is quite obvious.
“When I was an interim coach, I would play with him in games when I thought he could unlock defenses, even if I knew that his defensive work was not as good as other players. So that’s my opinion; there should be a space in certain games. “
During his time at the club, he managed six games in all competitions, winning once. Ozil started four of the six games with the Swede, but it seems that the same will not happen with Arteta.
