The president of IMANI Africa has asked the Member of Parliament for Suame, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, to resign from his position as Majority Leader in Parliament.
Considering the number of seats lost by the New Patriotic Party (PNP), Mr. Cudjoe believes that the current majority leader is not in a position to continue to hold his leadership in Parliament.
“It seems that the current leadership on the majority side or what used to be the majority side would need to be reviewed a second time.
“I think my good friend Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu is a very cunning mind, but I can suggest to you that he should probably hand over the mantle of leadership to someone else, probably because he has somehow lost the moral authority to go into battle, – Mr Cudjoe said.
This comes after the PNP lost some 47 seats in parliament to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Franklin Cudjoe believes that the loss is largely due to events leading up to the NPP parliamentary primaries.
He affirmed that the interference of the Executive and “the president basically imposing people here and there” contributed greatly to the defeat.
He added that the Majority Leader had a role to play in properly convincing the party leadership to keep some of the Members of Parliament who were expelled before and during the primaries, but he (Kyei Mensah Bonsu) did not. did.
“If you are the major general of your army and you go into battle and then allow the executive arm of the government to decide virtually who to take into battle, I think it requires some introspection,” he said.
“We saw what happened in Akwatia, we saw what happened in Fomena and the president went there to say that he would not work with anyone who goes against his directive.
“It means that the parliamentary leadership did not do a proper job convincing the president that ‘I am the head of Parliament, I know my people and what they can do,'” he added.
The IMANI president further suggested that the party consider replacing Kyei Mensah Bonsu with Effutu MP Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, who, according to him, has also led some of the Parliament’s leaders.
He said replacing the majority leader with a much younger person would be a game changer for the party in Ghana’s failed eighth parliament.
“[Afenyo-Markin] he is kind of an advocate, he is young and possibly a negotiator in a positive sense and can adapt well to the other side. The next Parliament looks very interesting and people are needed who can help guide the process.
“I’m just making a passionate plea and if you look to the other side (opposition) you have people like Haruna, Muntaka, Suhuyini, Okudzeto, John Jinapor, these are known to be headlines in the game, so you need an equal important side that it may be younger, ”he said.
