Frank Lampard has told his Chelsea stars not to get carried away by his victory over Burnley, telling them to keep working hard. It comes after a 3-0 win that saw new signings Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner on the scoreboard. After a slippery start to the season, the Blues are looking to put together a stretch of form to propel them into a possible Premier League title challenge.
Chelsea came out leading 3-0 over a struggling Burnley with Frank Lampard able to use all his summer transfers.
Hakim Ziyech was the protagonist, scoring one and grabbing an assist, in a match that also scored goals from Kurt Zouma and Timo Werner.
And even though the Blues were advancing, they were also determined on defense and this is currently their best clean sheet record since they hired Lampard.
With Edouard Mendy between the sticks, they have yet to concede a goal in the Premier League and have five clean sheets in six, the only anomaly with Kepa Arrizabalaga in the lineup.
There were excellent individual performances across the field, Reece James, Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham among them, as Chelsea enter a crucial period of the season.
They face Rennes twice in the Champions League, as well as matches against Newcastle and Sheffield United, two teams that took points from them last year.
If the West London team wants to be promoted as Premier League challengers, this is the kind of game they should win without a hitch.
After that, they face Tottenham, with the crafty José Mourinho in charge, who are trying to make their own case as title contenders.
And Lampard seemed to urge this message to his stars, telling them to keep working.
He said: “We have certainly had a good momentum from this week. Draw at Manchester United, clean sheet and two performances that are progressing and improving.
“I felt it. Before the start of the season we brought players, we didn’t have preseason.
“We have not had that work time and the work is happening. I knew we couldn’t throw everything up in the air and that it would work perfectly.
“We are not at the end of the road. But the clean sheet is a great sign from the backbone of the team, Thiago and Edouard Mendy have helped enormously in that.”
“But the group, the way we are defending with the mentality, today has been really positive with the ball.
“I’m not going to jump up and down after a win like this, but it was a really positive day.”
It was a good day for the new signings at Stamford Bridge, but Lampard insisted that building relationships on the field will be vital this season.
He added: “There was certainly balance there today and we worked on that. Even though we can’t physically work that much, we talked about it a lot in training camp yesterday.”
“That’s part of the process when we bring in new players who have to feel for each other. Not just what I saw, but their relationships on the field.
“Again, I don’t want to jump to conclusions at the end and say that our balance is already done, as you have to keep working on that.
“But, when you have a clean sheet, when you are scoring goals, you are going in the right direction. I really enjoyed today’s performance.
“That’s what I liked, some of the angles we were doing, getting the balls through the lines and it was more positive and aggressive in our forward passing style.
“I think it is part of the process and the work. It is a good step forward and we have to continue.”
