Frank Lampard makes Callum Hudson-Odoi promise amid Bayern Munich transfer offer

Frank Lampard has promised that Chelsea fans will see more of Callum Hudson-Odoi’s prowess over the course of the season.

Once again, the 19-year-old has been subject to the transfer of news before the deadline, and Bayern Munich made moves to sign him before the window slammed shut on Monday night.

The Champions League winners made a loan offer to the Blues on Saturday night, with a purchase option in 2021 of £ 70 million.

However, the deal has been rejected by Chelsea and the Blues are ready to push away any interest in the England international.

Hudson-Odoi started their first Premier League game of the campaign on Saturday in a 4-0 defeat of Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge.

With the signings of Kai Havertz, Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech, the young winger is in a real battle for regular playing time.

But Lampard believes Hudson-Odoi’s true skill will come to the fore this season.

“Callum’s natural ability with the ball, getting people out there and what he can do, will continue to come out as he develops,” Lampard said.

“The way he trains, and if he builds confidence and he needs to know that I’m behind him in that sense because he can give a lot, then we’ll see a lot more from Callum.

“We also have to remember that he had a very difficult injury to treat at a very young age.

“It’s not easy to beat that when you are a player with such pace and cunning in your nature. I think this season Callum can offer us a lot in those terms because of his ability. “

One of the ways Lampard has tried to pressure the young winger is on the defensive side of his game.

The Blues boss wants his wingers to push high up the field off the ball, putting pressure on the opposing defense and quickly recovering the ball.

One of the key men for Lampard last season in doing so was Willian, who left for Arsenal in the summer.

And the Blues manager admits that he would like to see Hudson-Odoi do that even more as it unfolds.

“I don’t really want to compare him to Willian,” added Lampard. “They both have attributes that are not all similar.

“I do believe that with Callum, his work without the ball is something in which I am very strong to try to improve because I think it is something that, at this level, in the Premier League you see how we were last year and Willian, a large part of the time, it was the first trigger for our recovery of the ball in the amount of ground it covered in high areas at high speed without the ball.

“Extremes have to have that mentality these days and that’s something I have to put into Callum and something he has to improve on. In bits today. [against Palace] he did that and can do it even better. “
