Former Real Madrid player Edwin Congo has been questioned by police regarding a cocaine trafficking ring in Spain.

The retired Colombian striker was arrested by officials in Madrid on Tuesday before undergoing an hour-long interrogation.

He was allowed to go home after questioning and has since declared his innocence.

“I am very calm,” Congo told the sports program El Chiringuito. “It is not a comfortable situation, but I am at home … relaxed. They asked me a series of questions and, in the end, I returned home.”

Congo was on Real Madrid’s books for three years after being signed at the start of the Galactic era in 1999.

However, the forward never made his competitive debut for Los Blancos, having been sent with three separate loan periods before his permanent departure in 2002.

He revealed that he may still have to speak to the police again along with his investigation.

“They told me to be ready for another call,” he said. “I am free and I am relaxed because I don’t traffic cocaine, I don’t have cocaine at home.”

“The police told me that I have to stay away from certain people who are not good for me. That I have to be aware of things and do them in a different way.”

The Congo was one of 10 people detained by the Spanish Narcotics Brigade as part of its operation, according to Brand

By signing for Madrid from Once Caldas, Congo became the most expensive Colombian footballer of all time, at a cost of € 5 million (around £ 3.1 million).
