The family of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings says they will not oppose any decision to name the University of Development Studies (UDS) in his honor.
Victor Gbeho, a former diplomat who is also a member of the Rawlings family, told a university delegation who had visited the home of the late Rawlings to sympathize with the family that the suggestion to name the UDS after JJ Rawlings is progressive and familiar. . will support you if UDS can do it.
“We have promptly consulted with His Excellency [Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings] and I have your authority to inform you that the family has never been against this prospective suggestion and we would have absolutely no objection if your university can achieve it, “said Victor Gbeho.
The vice-rector of the UDS, Prof. Gabriel Ayum Teye, who led the UDS delegation, explained that the support of the family has been noted and any decision of the government will be welcomed by the institution’s leadership.
“We have already given our blessing,” he stressed.
Jerry John Rawlings, when alive, turned down an offer for the UDS to name him. The offer has been pending due to the role that Rawlings played in establishing the institution, including donating the US $ 50,000 prize he won in Japan for “Sustainable End of Hunger” in Ghana.
But President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, while speaking at the school’s congregation on November 14, reiterated his earlier suggestion to name the UDS after the late Jerry John Rawlings.
Some individuals and political parties such as the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) have opposed the president’s suggestion that Rawlings never wanted the school to bear his name, so his wishes must be respected.
