John Dramani Mahama, presidential candidate, Democratic National Congress (NDC) resumed his campaign tour of the Ashanti region on Friday, suspended last week in honor of former President Jerry John Rawlings.
Former President Rawlings, founder of the NDC, died after a brief illness on November 12, 2020, at age 73.
A statement issued by James Agyenim-Boateng, copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra on Friday, said that before his campaign was suspended, the NDC presidential candidate received an enthusiastic welcome in many constituencies when he began a six-day campaign. campaign tour of the Region last week.
The statement relates that Mr. Mahama addressed the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II at the Manhyia Palace and cataloged a long list of development projects, including the new Kejetia Market in Kumasi, delivered by the NDC government.
He said that despite his party’s base of support in the region, the NDC’s track record of development projects in the Ashanti region made the ruling party’s track record pale to insignificance.
Mahama also said the NDC appreciated the votes it obtained in the Region and urged voters there to base their voting decision on the track record of the two major parties.
The statement read: “Subsequently, Mr. Mahama’s campaign received an additional boost with a great deal of support when he visited the local automotive center in Suame Magazine to assure the workers there that he would do everything possible to protect the jobs of mechanics from automobiles, installers, construction specialists, automobile air conditioning sprayers and repairers, and spare parts distributors ”.
“It is unacceptable that the employment of hundreds of thousands of people in the local auto industry is threatened simply because the government is encouraging the establishment of an auto assembly plant that will not employ more than 100 people.
“The government can become the main source of business for the car assembly plant while protecting the jobs of Ghanaians in the used car value chain,” he said.
