Glen Johnson believes that Jurgen Klopp could be fired by Liverpool next season if he fails to stop his current slump, but hopes the German will stick with the rest of the current campaign.
The club are currently in sixth position having suffered a defeat in each of their last four Premier League games, three of which have been at Anfield.
Brighton, Manchester City and Merseyside rivals Everton have taken three points away from Liverpool in recent weeks, leaving the top flight champions 19 points behind the leaders Pep Guardiola.
The 53-year-old confirmed last week that he has no plans to leave the club anytime soon despite rumors of disputes between players, and says the German was considering his future emergence following the other loss at Leicester.
But speaking to CheltenhamGuides.com, Johnson believes that Klopp’s success at the national and European level with the 2019 Champions League title means he has credit in the bank to survive the season, but that may not be true in 2021- 22.
“I think Klopp’s job will be safe, but next year it will be different,” Johnson said.
“This season you can’t talk about firing him because it has been incredible, but unfortunately at this level of football, things change quickly.
“I think his work will be absolutely fine for now, but next season it will be a different conversation.”
Johnson’s comments come just a day after reports in Klopp’s homeland claimed he could leave his post at Anfield next summer to become Germany’s manager.
BILD reported that there is a 68 percent chance that Klopp will be able to take over from current boss Joachim Low once the 2022 World Cup in Qatar is completed.
The report stated that he is considering returning to his native country and that he could leave Liverpool next year and take a six-month sabbatical before taking charge of the national team.
The same outlet gave him a 30 percent chance of fulfilling his contract with Liverpool, which runs until 2024, and one for each of them will either be fired or leave on his own.
