Manchester United’s form at home is suffering in part because their fans are still unable to get into Old Trafford, says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer thinks Manchester United misses their fans after continuing their winless streak at Old Trafford with a goalless draw against Chelsea.
Following losses to Crystal Palace and Tottenham, United have failed to win any of their first three home games in a season for the first time since 1972-73.
Five games without a league win at home dating back to last season is also United’s longest streak since February 1990.
Road wins over Newcastle United and Paris Saint-Germain Heading into the game he failed to inspire Solskjaer’s men to cross the line on their own turf, where Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy made two excellent saves to deny Marcus Rashford.
The United boss felt the exploits of both sides in Europe during the week: Chelsea drew 0-0 against Sevilla in the Champions League – took its toll, but was obsessed with a lack of fans as the closed-door reality of the coronavirus era continues in the UK.
“Two teams that played in Europe this week, I think it showed in the first half. It was not the best,” he told Sky Sports.
“I think in the second half we move on. If the Stretford End is full, we could get help and get the ball over the line.”
“We adjusted them and created some half-decent opportunities. There was a great block from Thiago Silva and the keeper made a couple of fantastic saves against Marcus.
“Overall a good defensive performance and we created enough opportunities to give ourselves a win.”
Cavani was close to Man United
Edinson Cavani, United’s oldest debutant in the Premier League since Zlatan Ibrahimovic in August 2016, came close to scoring with his first touch for United after coming off the bench.
But that incident again prompted Solskjaer to speculate on the effect United’s fanbase could have had on an often severe encounter.
“A little run to the near post and a little movement. That would have been great for him,” he said.
“If we had that Stretford End behind the goal, it would have created more pressure and more urgency. That’s missing, you’re watching the game and it’s a different sport.”
“With the fans here, they help you and we miss them.
“It’s the same for all teams, but I think everyone agrees there is a little less in football. The advantage is gone and I can’t wait to get it back.”
