Mr. Frederick Langteng, the Assembly Member of the Kalsagri Electoral Area in Lawra Township of the Upper West region, has asked the Assembly to fix reflectors on the metal bridge in the Nawer community to prevent accidents.
He said the lack of reflectors on the metal bridge made it difficult for motorists to travel at night due to poor visibility.
He said that some people had died and that it was necessary to accelerate the repair of the reflectors to improve visibility at night.
Mr. Lanteng spoke during a social audit engagement organized by the National Civic Education Commission (NCCE) in Kalsagri in Lawra Township.
The program was part of the implementation of the project funded by the European Union (EU) called: “Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Program (ARAP)”.
The assembly member asked the assembly to accelerate action on some projects, including the roofing of a community-built maternity block, the expansion of the Kalsagri dam and the drilling of four wells in communities within the area.
Mr. Lanteng expressed his gratitude to the NCCE and the EU for the project.
He said it had helped people understand their role in holding duty-bearers to account and contributing to development.
Referring to the ARAP project, Mr. Mornah Jesurun Ninge, NCCE’s Municipal Director of Lawra, said it was to promote good governance and democracy through greater awareness of citizens in participatory democracy.
He said that it is important that citizens get involved and participate in the development process of their communities as a civic responsibility.
Mr. Mornah told people that they had a right to hold guarantors accountable for their obligations for their development needs.
Ms. Kuomah, NCCE Regional Director, advised citizens not to rely so heavily on the government for every development need, but to be motivated to undertake self-help initiatives to attract government support.
He praised the community for starting the construction of a maternity block and asked the Assembly for the necessary assistance to complete it.
Mrs. Kuomah urged the Chief and people in the community to take an interest in the development projects initiated by the Assembly and to work with them to achieve the purpose.
Martine Domotiere Bomba-ire, Municipal Executive Director of Lawra (MCE), educated people about the Assembly’s existing and planned projects.
He mentioned the Pavuu-Gbelinkaa-Babile highway, the Kalsagri-Nanyaare highway, the second phase of the construction of the Kalsagri dam, the connection of electricity to the Kalsagri CHPS Composite, the drilling of four wells and a solar-powered well mechanized as some of the projects that were already under contract.
He said that the needs of the community would receive the necessary attention from the Assembly.
Bomba-ire said an open-door policy would allow his administration to better serve the people.
He praised the NCCE and the EU for the program because it would help promote participatory democracy.
