The Sefwi-Wiawso Divisional Police Command has detained five people for allegedly stealing two-week-old twin babies in Punikrom, in the North West Region of Waiwso Township.

The suspects are Paulina Owusu 26, Haruna Yusif 36, Stephen Owusu 32, Kofi Nkrumah, 24 and Sampson Addai, 33 years old.

Confirming the arrest to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Christopher Dzakel, Waiwso Divisional Commander said, four of the suspects were arrested earlier, but Kofi Nkrumah, who was then a fugitive, was later arrested.

According to him, his team had intelligence on March 14, 2021 that Paulina Owusu from Sefwi-Boako under his jurisdiction had hired four men to steal a baby from her and that she had rented them an apartment.

He said he quickly organized his men to rush to the aforementioned location as he did not want anything to happen to the babies.

The commander said the suspects were subsequently arrested and after questioning confirmed that Paulina Owusu hired them to steal the babies.

DSP Dzakel said the five were sent to the Waiwso trial court, where they were taken into police custody to reappear on Monday, March 29, 2021.

Abena Owusuaa, mother of the twins in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) said that the main suspect (Paulina Owusu) came to her house pretending to sell her meat just to fix the theft of her babies.

She revealed that one of the babies had a challenge on one of the legs and was referred to Komfo Anokye University Hospital in Kumasi for treatment, but due to financial difficulties she has not been able to do so.
