The Volta Regional Fire Service has closed some major electronics outlets in Ho and Sogakope for fire certificates.
A raid led by Richard Bisimpo, a regional fire safety officer, in collaboration with police, shut down branches of retailers, including Class House Electronics and Victor Electronics, over their failure to produce fire certificates for their facilities.
The Officer told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the visit was the fourth in an attempt to get the outlets to acquire and renew the certifications.
He said stores would remain closed until required standards were met.
The team also visited the West African Football Academy (WAFA) training facility in Sogakope and inspected fire hydrants, water distribution systems and fire alarms.
Some gas stations in the South Tongu district were also examined on the maintenance and use of electric power systems.
Bisimpo said electronics retailers were key targets because of their products’ susceptibility to fire and must meet fire safety and prevention standards.
He expressed concern about the low level of compliance in the Region, and said the exercise was a “wake-up call to all who are aware that fire certificates are necessary but are not acquiring them.”
Bisimpo asked managers and operators to consider the importance of fire certificates, saying they help ensure adequate preparedness against fire outbreaks and other emergency situations.
“The fire certificate details the provisions for fire incidents and includes fire extinguishers, hydrants, emergency assembly points, smoke detectors, and alarm sirens.
“Businesses without fire certificates are killing the nation,” he said.
The officer further reported that emergency assembly points were clearly marked and said the Fire Service was available to offer training sessions on emergency management for personnel.
