FIFA will pay Liverpool £ 2 million in compensation to cover the wages of the crooked Joe Gomez.

The defender suffered a serious knee injury in England’s final training session before Thursday’s 3-0 friendly win against the Republic of Ireland.

It is feared that the rest of the season will be lost in news that was a severe blow to Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

The Football Association has confirmed to Sportsmail that FIFA will pay the money to cover Gomez’s salary, which is understood to be around £ 80,000 per week.

England players are covered by FIFA’s club protection program, an insurance package that allows clubs to claim directly through the scheme.

The protection covers injuries to players in all A matches, friendlies and practice.

FIFA will calculate the compensation pro rata until Gomez can restart training for the first team.

The maximum coverage under the program is £ 6.75 million for 365 days, calculated at a prorated maximum daily rate of £ 18,430.

Liverpool have not ruled out Gomez for the season, but Celtic goalkeeper Fraser Forster was out for 10 months with the same type of injury in 2015 while at Southampton.

A similar period on the sidelines would mean seven months before Gomez was close to returning to training. The protection does not cover the first 28 days, but the Anfield club will still file a claim for £ 2 million.

The substantial pay will be no consolation for Klopp, who needs to navigate 11 games with just one recognized central defender until the January transfer window opens.
