Fernandes doubles as Manchester United beat Everton – Ghana soccer latest news, live scores, results

[ad_1]

Bruno Fernandes scored his 13th goal for Manchester United in the Premier League; 10 of them were in away games.

Bruno Fernandes’ double eased the pressure on manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as Manchester United got back on the road to victory at Everton.

Following their calamitous loss to Istanbul Basaksehir in the middle of the week and to Arsenal last Sunday, it looked like the visitors were heading for more negative headlines as Everton went ahead at 19 minutes.

Jordan Pickford’s punt forward was thrown by Dominic Calvert-Lewin before Bernard found the bottom corner with a heavy strike.

But in the space of 13 minutes, Solskjaer’s team completed a change of course.

They tied five minutes after trailing when Fernandes ghosted into the area and headed past Pickford after a Luke Shaw cross for his fifth goal of the season.

Then, after Lucas Digne hit David de Gea’s right post with an upward shot, United went ahead when a high cross from Fernandes to Marcus Rashford landed in the bottom corner.

There were more chances for a much-improved United before Edinson Cavani scored his first goal for the club on the fast break in the last minute of overtime.

The victory sees United avoid their worst start to a season in the top flight after seven games since 1990-91, and gives Solskjaer a breather as the Premier League heads into the international break.

Victory for Everton would have brought them to the top of the table, but they struggled to bring down United after their opener and thanked Pickford, who stepped aside and made several saves.

A third loss in a row means they remain fifth in the table as United climb to 13th place.

United offers a perfect response to pressure from Solskjaer United have won seven consecutive Premier League away games, their longest streak in the competition since August 1993 (also seven)

The pressure had mounted on Solskjaer after poor results and performances in two games over the past week.

But the Norwegian said he would not “fall like a house of cards” and insisted that he is the right man to take the club forward, despite the fact that former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is linked to his position.

Once again, Solskjaer showed that when the pressure is on his team he can produce a positive result, underscoring his point that the team may not be in crisis but lacks consistency.

Having made four changes to the team that lost in Istanbul, Everton’s first goal did little to allay fears over the United defense, which conceded a shocking opening goal on Wednesday from their own corner.

Everton took a route one approach with a quick Calvert-Lewin move that led to a Bernard shot that hit the post on entering.

But with Victor Lindelof back at the wing, and more protection from Fred and Scott McTominay in midfield, United were more solid on defense and had the magic of Fernandes to bring them back into the game.

The Portuguese likes Goodison Park, who scored here last season in a 1-1 draw, and his header was well executed after finding space in the Everton area.

Shaw, who took advantage of James Rodriguez’s failure to back down, also assisted in United’s second by allowing Rashford to slide in and support Fernandes for his sixth goal of the season.

Harry Maguire improved a lot, but was involved in successive dramas around the time when the video assistant referee rejected a penalty appeal before taking Digne out with a strong challenge despite receiving the ball.

But Solskjaer, who could rightly point to more opportunities for Rashford, would have been relieved by Cavani’s injury-time goal as Everton sought an equalizer.

The Argentine swept Fernandes’ pass to go off the mark and make it a near-perfect day for United and their coach under fire.
