Paul Pogba has revealed the debilitating impact the Covid-19 hiring in the preseason had on his fitness, with the Manchester United midfielder struggling to breathe during matches.

The 27-year-old said he was unable to run during his first appearance of the campaign, against Crystal Palace in September, and complained to staff about feeling “strange” in training.

Pogba started on Saturday against West Ham and scored the tie that put United on their way to a 3-1 victory in front of 2,000 fans at London Stadium.

“It’s strange,” Pogba said of her suffering from the coronavirus in August. ‘It is difficult to explain. Even in training, I would tell the physical trainer that I feel strange. It’s not me. I got tired really fast and got out of breath really fast.

‘The first game of the season, I couldn’t run. I was trying. I spoke with the coach: “I’m going to start the game and let’s see.” But I was very out of breath and it took me a long time to get back into shape. ‘

Pogba, whose form was criticized earlier in the season, continued: ‘It’s good to come back to the team and score this goal to help the team get back in the game. It is a big difference.

I am also finding my rhythm. I feel better. I felt like I could go again, control the game, get the ball. That’s what I like.’

After a dismal performance in the first half for United, Pogba was part of an energetic performance in the second half that ended West Ham. That has become a habit.

A Premier League table for minutes 0-45 has United in the relegation zone. By 45-90, they are title contenders.

And now Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s United is at the top of the Premier League. They are one tie away from qualifying for the knockout stages of the Champions League, in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup, and have Watford in the third round of the FA Cup.

Quadruple? Let’s not be foolish. But they have one of the best footballers in Bruno Fernandes, although asking him to save Solskjaer’s bacon over and over again is unfair.

West Ham couldn’t take advantage of the multitude of opportunities it had before the break. The 2,000 fans had enjoyed 45 minutes of attacking football from their side. It is no exaggeration to say that the hosts could have led 5-0 before the break.

Jarrod Bowen had a goal disallowed for offside. Pablo Fornals hit the side net at point blank range and then hit a post. Sebastien Haller slipped after rounding out goalkeeper Dean Henderson.

In the end, they led just 1-0 at the break, courtesy of Tomas Soucek. United had been embarrassing. Then came the cavalry, Marcus Rashford for Edinson Cavani, Fernandes for Donny van de Beek, and so did the controversy around Pogba who made it 1-1 in the 65th minute.

VAR Lee Mason couldn’t tell if the ball had left the field of play in preparation for the tie, with no cameras calibrated to look for that.

Assistant Simon Long wasn’t looking at Henderson’s clearance flight because he was looking offside. Moyes was, and insisted that he flew over his head in the technical area.

However, Pogba’s sweet punch counted. With West Ham shaken, United made it 3-1 with excellent finishes from Mason Greenwood and Rashford.

Now coronavirus-free and in top physical shape, Pogba wants to prove his skeptics wrong.
