A precondition for the return of the Ghana Premier League was the absence of fans in the centers of play.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports and the National Sports Authority in separate statements warned that all matches would be played behind closed doors and fans were expected to watch them from home.

In light of this, the government donated GHC900,000 to the 18 clubs to help protect them in their activities.

However, the return of the game has seen a violation of this protocol that was necessary due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In several games played, it has been found that the different stadiums are loaded with spectators, contrary to preventive protocols.

On Wednesday, December 16, 2020, Aduana Stars presented Accra Hearts of Oak at Agyemang Badu Park in Dormaa.

Surprisingly, there were hundreds of fans in the stands watching the game with utter disregard for social distancing protocols.

Fans were seen in the stands drumming and cheering for the home team that won the match by 2 goals.

The incident comes a few weeks after the president’s health adviser revealed that soccer games will continue to be played behind closed doors.

“We are trying to protect people’s lives here. There is no agenda against any group of people. We told the Ghana Football Association to keep fan attendance while the Ghana Premier League goes on to study the spread of the virus, ”Kwame Oware told Odiasempa on Happy 98.9FM.

However, critics have accused the government of hypocrisy, as thousands of party supporters were allowed to gather during rallies leading up to the December 7 elections.

They believe that if it is acceptable for match supporters to gather in one place, then football fans should also have the opportunity to see their clubs.
