Few footballers become as iconic in a club in as little time as Radamel Falcao in his two seasons at Atlético de Madrid.
His pace of work, his goals, his charisma, his way of appearing in the great games, made him an idol for fans, more than even in the final Europa League victory 3-0 over Athletic Club in 2012 with two goals from Colombiana.
“They were two teams from the same country, Athletic was very good and had a very good season, we improved as a team as the season progressed,” Falcao recalled.
“I remember we were in our own half, defending, we got the ball back and Diego sent it forward, I was alone and I tried to wait for the team to catch up.”
“Once I was in the box, Diego passed and ran diagonally to take my marker, I went one by one with [Fernando] Amorebieta and I thought that if I was duped I would have an angle to shoot.
“Then I was shocked and took the ball to leave the left foot and I had an angle to shoot, I went down the far post with my weaker foot, because I’m right-handed.”
“My father always insisted that I try that shot and at the end he always said: ‘when are you going to score on the far post?’ and right in that final it came out!
“Those kinds of goals happen when you’re most inspired, when you’re in complete control of the situation.
“In the picture of the situation, I knew I had my back to the goal, my goal was to try to turn my back on the goal to turn and have a shooting angle, it is a situation that only happens when you are more inspired.” “
Falcao was a hero at Estadio Vicente Calderón, scoring 70 goals in 91 games before departing for Monaco in 2013.
