The government has been asked to extend the provision of free Internet connectivity to technical universities.

The Vice Chancellor of Kumasi Technical University (KsTU), Professor Osei – Wusu Achaw, said that lack of access to Wi-Fi services has adversely hampered e-learning activities in the institutions.

Speaking at the 16th KsTU congregation in Kumasi, he called for an expansion of the deployment of schools’ internet connectivity.

In April 2019, Vice President Dr. Bawumia asked the ECG to leverage its fiber optic infrastructure to support the government’s free WiFi project for schools.

Although the government delivered on its promise in 2020 by extending Wi-Fi connectivity to schools across the country, technical universities are not yet connected.

The KsTU vice-chancellor wants the government to expand free Wi-Fi connectivity.

“The government recently provided free Wi-Fi to traditional universities and high schools, but left out technical universities.

“We kindly ask the government to extend the gesture to technical universities to reduce the burden of providing a Wi-Fi service to allow our staff and students to engage in virtual learning activities,” he said.
A total of 3,546 students graduated from the university with more than 6,000 students admitted.

The student population is now over 13,000.

The student to staff ratio at the university is currently high when compared to the standards of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).

Professor Osei – Wusu Achaw pleaded with the government to provide authorization for the university to hire more staff.

“Our student to staff ratio is unusually high, especially when compared to the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) standard of 1:18.

“The university, therefore, asks the government to provide authorization allowing us to hire an additional 500 employees so that we can comply with the GTEC standards,” he said.

He again called on the government to exclude “University lands in Danyame from its ongoing redevelopment agenda in the Danyame Ridge enclave.”

“The university needs these lands in order to achieve its development objectives in order to contribute significantly to the national cause,” emphasized the CV.

Kumasi Technical University (KsTU) has been voted the best technical university in Ghana and the 8th among the 68 universities in the country.
