Everyone will watch the Evolution Championship Series (EVO) from afar this summer. It’s transitioning to an online-only format in 2020 due to the coronavirus outbreak, the organization behind it announced on Twitter, but will still offer a full lineup of tournaments that feature popular fighting games.
EVO 2020 is scheduled to feature Dragon Ball FighterZ, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Tekken 7, Soul Calibur VI, Street Fighter V: Champion Edition, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, and other titles.
Annually, thousands of professional gamers and fans gather at the Mandalay Bay for EVO. It won’t occur in 2020, but the organization behind the event is likely planning to return to Las Vegas in 2021 or 2022. Nobody knows how the global pandemic will play out in the coming months, and select regions could get hit with additional outbreaks until a treatment or vaccine emerges. Several companies and organizations which run annual events during a calendar year are prepared to host online-only versions through 2021.
In addition to EVO, the gaming industry lost E3 2020’s in-person component amid the ongoing crisis. IGN, though, will host the ‘Summer of Gaming’ showcase in June, and Geoff Keighly just announced to multi-month ‘Summer Game Fest’ to highlight what major and independent developers are planning to release. So there’s a lot for gamers around the world to still enjoy even if popular events like EVO and E3 are drastically different in 2020.
EVO didn’t specify if the online edition of the annual event will take place during the same dates. It was originally set to run from July 31 to August 2.
