Traditional Akwamuman leaders in the eastern region have expressed concern about separatist groups that are trying to reclaim parts of Akwamu as they seek to withdraw from Ghana.
In a statement signed by Akwamumanhene, Odeneho Kwafo Akoto III on Monday, warned the group responsible for Friday’s revolt to leave Akwamu state and its surroundings with immediate effect.
“We note that at no point in Akwamu’s long history did the state of Akwamu even remotely share a border with any land that supposedly belonged to what was analogous to the German colony of West Africa. While we believe that their actions are totally misplaced, such actions disturb the peace of Akwamu and its surroundings, ”the statement reads in part.
He added: “We advise the insurgents to immediately leave Akwamu and the surrounding lands, so that we can enjoy our peace. Akwamu is willing to fully cooperate with the State Security Agencies to remove the evildoers from our lands and adjacent areas. “
In the early hours of Friday, a group of armed men calling themselves the Western Togo Restoration Front (WTRF) forcibly seized the Aveyime and Mepe police stations simultaneously, overpowered the police officers , broke into the armory and took all the weapons.
According to the statement, “Not one square foot of Akwamu was part of the places visited by eminent persons nominated by the United Nations to learn of the wishes of residents to join nascent Ghana or Togo after a referendum on the issue.”
“The nation of Ghana did not violently seize any territory that supposedly belonged to these scoundrels, or anyone else, to justify the illegal occupation of our territory.
“While we reiterate that not an inch of Akwamu’s land has anything to do with your illicit claims, we suggest that you abandon Akwamu from now on and submit whatever claims you feel you should bring to the rightful successor to the League of Nations, the UN.
“We warn that Akwamu will resist any attempt to kidnap even one square inch of Akwamu. They are different times but we are the same people from yesterday.
“The Ghanaian security forces have our fullest cooperation to remove these criminals with alien ideology from among us.”
