Lionel Messi was in inspired form to Barcelona, scoring twice in La Liga’s 3-2 victory in Athletic Bilbao.
Bilbao took the lead in the third minute thanks to Iñaki Williams, but Pedri leveled and Messi scored on both sides of the interval and also hit the wood twice.
Iker Muniain produced late fins for Barcelona with a crisp finish in the 89th minute, but Barcelona held on to extend their unbeaten streak to eight games and move to third place behind Atlético de Madrid and Real Madrid.
Copa del Rey: Atletico shocked
La Liga leaders Atletico suffered a shock 1-0 Copa del Rey defeat to Segunda B side Cornella.
Atlético, which included Joao Félix, Ángel Correa, Saúl Niguez and Vitolo on Cornella’s artificial field, fell to Adrián Jiménez’s goal in the fifth minute and sent Ricard Sánchez off in the second half.

In Italy, Juventus close distances with the leaders of Serie A AC Milan seven points behind with a 3-1 victory at the San Siro.
Federico Chiesa put Juventus ahead twice, with Milan’s Davide Calabria equalizing just before half-time. Weston McKennie closed the victory for the Turin team with 14 minutes remaining.
Sampdoria stunned second place Inter de Milan winning 2-1 when Alexis Sánchez missed a penalty for the visitors.
Sánchez saw his penalty in the 12th minute pushed by Emil Audero and Ashley Young sent the rebound against the post.
Antonio Candreva and Keita Balde ended Inter’s eight-game winning streak when Stefan de Vrij’s header in the 65th minute was nothing more than consolation. Inter is still one point behind their rivals in the city.
Rome narrowed the gap with Inter to three points with a 3-1 victory in Crotone.
A double off the loan from Real Madrid Borja Mayoral and a penalty from Henrikh Mkhitaryan put Roma into cruise control in the 35th minute, and Vladimir Golemic cut the deficit in the fourth quarter.
