Karim Benzema rescued Real Madrid again by scoring two goals in the closing minutes to take a 2-1 victory at home to Elche in La Liga.

Elche took the lead in the crash just after the hour with a head butt from Dani Calvo. Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane placed the midfielder duo Toni Kroos and Luka Modric immediately after the goal and the change paid off when Kroos played a short corner to Modric, who crossed for Benzema to head home in the minute 73. Benzema, who scored late last week to draw 1-1 with leaders Atlético de Madrid, then found the winner in injury time with an impressive blow inside the area.

Alex converted a penalty in the 84th minute to win Cadiz a 1-1 draw to ten men Alaves. Former Newcastle United striker Joselu gave Alavés the lead, also from the penalty spot in the first half before Manuel García was sent off for a second yellow card with nine minutes remaining.

In Germany, Bayern Munich sailed to a 3-1 victory in Werder Bremen with striker Robert Lewandowski climbing to second place on the Bundesliga’s all-time goalscorer list as the champions opened a five-point lead at the top.

Leon Goretzka led Bayern to the lead in the 22nd minute with Thomas Mueller and then gave his 13th assist of the season for Serge Gnabry to enter. Lewandowski hit the wood twice early in the second half before taking advantage to make it 3-0 and join Klaus Fischer on 268 Bundesliga goals, second on the all-time goalscorer list behind only Gerd Mueller and his astonishing record of 365 goals.

Former Arsenal and Germany defender Shkodran Mustafi scored an own goal as last place Schalke moved one step closer to relegation with a 5-0 win in Wolfsburg. Union Berlin captain Christopher Trimmel scored in a 2-1 victory over Cologne and Mainz beat Freiburg 1-0.

In Serie A, Hamed Traorè scored a winning goal in the 81st minute as Sassuolo defeat Verona 3-2. Verona had come back twice thanks to goals from Darko Lazović and Federico Dimarco that nullified the efforts of Manuel Locatelli and Filip Djuricic.
