Barcelona had intended to make their move in the winter transfer market, but following the resignation of Josep Maria Bartomeu as president, and before the club elections, it is highly unlikely that the club will try for Eric García or Memphis Depay in january.
The Blaugrana would negotiate the incorporation of both players in the winter transfer window or when their contracts come to an end next summer. Barcelona had already reached an agreement with Depay and would sign him in January in case he could unload a striker.
However, the reality now is different from when this strategy was designed, as the club is now in the hands of a management committee.
Their powers to sign new players are very limited because the club’s bylaws indicate that their decisions must be taken on the necessary and essential actions for the maintenance of the normal activities of the club.
The president of the commission, Carles Tusquets, could get the approval of both the coach and the sports directors to sign these two players, since this would be a non-negotiable first step but easy to achieve considering that the club already tried to sign both in summer.
The problem is that these operations would have to be ratified by the new president and here the situation is very complicated. Five years ago, the old Barcelona management committee decided to sign Arda Turan.
Javier Faus was in charge of making the play and the first thing he did was get the go-ahead from then coach Luis Enrique and the club’s sports commission.
The second step was to get Atlético de Madrid to sign a document in which they agreed that if the new president did not agree with the signing of Turan, Barcelona could return the player to Los Rojiblancos after paying 3.5 million euros.
In the end, it was not necessary to pay the aforementioned sum, since Bartomeu won the elections and gave the green light to Turan’s move.
However, now the situation is not the same. At that time there was no competition, the players were on vacation and the new Barça president was at the helm of the club before the preseason began.
Turan was in ‘stand by’ a few weeks in which there was no competition, something that cannot happen in January, while everything indicates that the elections will be in February.
Tusquets noted Monday that the elections will be called during the Christmas holidays and will take place after the end of the January transfer window.
In the event that the committee signs a player, the new Barcelona president can challenge the signing. This could lead to a complaint towards Tusquets that will not risk a lawsuit.
One solution would be to have a document signed by all the candidates accepting the signing of these footballers, but this seems highly unlikely.
“You can sign free players, but before you buy players, you have to sell others,” Tusquets said. “They must have the approval of the coach and the technical secretariat with the option that they can return to their teams if the new president does not want those players.”
