Epilepsy cases increase in the western region

A registered mental health nurse in the Department of Psychiatry at Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital, Ms Nelly Mensah, says the facility continued to record high cases of epilepsy.

According to her, in 2020, the hospital registered 506 cases out of 2,006 patients examined with 204 men and 302 women.

Ms. Mensah said other conditions of concern were included; Schizophrenia, delirium and depression. He explained that epilepsy was a chronic disorder that caused recurrent and unprovoked seizures due to some irregular activities in the brain.

Mensah claimed that epilepsy was a fairly common neurological disorder affecting 65 million people worldwide and that seizures were caused by various factors, including high fever, head trauma, low blood sugar levels and alcohol withdrawal.

He hinted that the commonly reported causes are lack of sleep, illness or fever, stress, bright lights, caffeine, alcohol, medications or skipping meals, overeating, and allergies to specific food ingredients, adding that the rest are pictures, smells and unusual sounds.
