The Cocoa Processing Company says there are enough chocolates on the market to support this year’s Valentine’s Day celebrations, dubbed National Chocolate Day in Ghana.
Augustine Webongtey Apom, the company’s Kumasi area manager, told the Ghana news agency in Kumasi that there was no shortage of the product in Kumasi, as speculated.
In response to reports of possible chocolate shortages ahead of the Valentine’s Day celebration on Sunday, he said there was sufficient stock available for customers of the company’s products.
He explained that since most of the time the public preferred the Golden Tree chocolate brand, the demand for it in this period was always high. This year’s Valentine’s Day celebration appears to be low in the Kumasi metropolis.
The usual hype that characterized the event, especially on the radio, was almost absent.
Some people attributed it to the closure of restaurants, nightclubs and other event venues as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, the sponsorship of chocolates and other gift items was occurring rapidly in the markets.
A visit to the central business district by the Ghana News Agency on Friday afternoon said people were buying chocolates and other gift items. Kofi Appau, a phone distributor, expressed concern about the closure of entertainment centers as a result of the coronavirus and said it would affect the celebrations.
Ms Adwoa Yeboah, a merchant who sold various gifts at Kejetia Market, was concerned about the rising prices of gift items in the market.
“I have traded these items for a long time, but this year people are not really buying because of the prices,” he told GNA.
He explained that the price of “love” teddy bears, for example, which sold between 15 and 200 GHc last year, now sold between ¢ 40.00 GH and ¢ 300.00 GH.
However, Miss Mabel Odame, a chocolate merchant, said that although prices were high, demand had increased in recent days and it was difficult for people to get anything to buy.
