Jamal Musiala has become the youngest ever English scorer in the Champions League after scoring for Bayern Munich in their 4-1 win over Lazio in Rome.
The 17-year-old moved to the German giants from the Chelsea academy in 2019, and has played an important role in the first team so far this season.
He was given a start in the first leg of his round of 16 tie with Lazio, and after Robert Lewandowski put Bayern in front early on, Musiala’s big moment came in the 24th minute when his shot low from outside the area doubled the advantage.
And he saw Musiala surpass Alex Oxlade Chamberlain as the youngest English scorer in the competition’s history.
Meanwhile, Lewandowski’s goal was his 72nd total in the tournament to put him ahead of Raúl in third place on the all-time top scorers list, with only Lionel Messi (119) and Cristiano Ronaldo (132) for on top of the Polish striker.
A new goal from Leroy Sane before the break and an own goal by Francesco Acerbi effectively ended the tie as a duel, although Joaquín Correa achieved what will surely be nothing more than a consolation for Lazio.
It means that Bayern’s chances of defending the trophy it won last season look promising as they try to win the seventh European Cup in their history.
Great things are expected from Musiala, but England looks set to miss out on his services even though he has represented them from U15 to U21 level.
He was born in Stuttgart to a British-Nigerian father and a German mother, making him eligible to play in all three countries.
But Musiala is expected to pick Germany, and he is likely to join the team and possibly make his national team debut next month despite Gareth Southgate’s efforts to change his mind.
