Energy Minister John Peter Amewu overcame stiff competition from Professor Margaret Kwaku of the Democratic National Congress to annex Hohoe’s parliamentary seat to the NDC.
She garnered 26,952 votes representing 54.7% of total votes at the close of Monday’s parliamentary elections, while her close contender, NDC Professor Margaret Kwaku, garnered 21,821 votes.
Significantly, this represents a historic feat in the 4th Republic of Ghana, where the nuclear power plant government managed to win a parliamentary seat in the Volta region, the stronghold of the NDC.
This means that Mr. Amewu would be the sole NPP MP as the NDC held the rest of the 17 seats in the region.
The PNP also advanced in the presidential elections, as President Akufo-Addo obtained 14,389 votes to 6,869 votes in 2016.
NDC candidate John Dramani Mahama got 33,542 votes, a slight drop from the 35,117 votes he got in 2016.
Speaking to the media after being declared the winner of the Hohoe parliamentary elections, Amewu praised President Akufo-Addo for the advisory and guidance role he played in the run-up to the general elections.
“What did the magic for Hohoe is the advice of His Excellency Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo, that he be focused on everything he does. Concentrate. He said it several times and in several meetings that we had together with other Ministers. His words were focused, be your peace. “
“It just means that when it is necessary to disagree with your friends, you must learn to solve those problems quickly. So these were the two things that worked for me, ”he emphasized.
Mr. Amweu reiterated his commitment to human development during his first term in parliament by empowering women and addressing youth unemployment in the constituency.
“In terms of infrastructure development, I think we have done a lot for Hohoe, so we are going to focus on human development in the next four years,” he concluded.
Amewu served as the Municipal Executive Director of Hohoe under the Kufuor administration from 2001 to 2009.
His excellent performance as regional president of the NPP between 2014 and 2017, led the elephant fraternity to gain ground in the Volta region.
President Akufo-Addo appointed him Minister of Lands and Natural Resources in June 2017 and later ordained him to head the Ministry of Energy in August 2020.
Amewu, a native of Wli Todzi, obtained an MBA in Finance from the University of Ghana, Legon.
He holds a postgraduate degree in International Energy Industry Management and a Master’s in Petroleum Law and Policy from the University of Dundee in the UK.
