IFAD calls for an end to police brutality

The International Federation of Women Lawyers (IFAD) Nigeria has come together to denounce police brutality, abuse and human rights violations, sparking #EndSARS and #EndSWAT protests across the country.

In a statement by Rhoda Prevail Tyoden, Country Vice President / National President, and National Advertising Secretary Eliana Martins, FIDA expressed shock that the police have continued to attack, arrest and detain young people for protesting and shooting real rounds at them.

The statement noted that citizens deserve the respect of law enforcement officers whose mission is to primarily defend, protect and support the defenseless in society, not to oppress, torture, dehumanize and kill them.

“We found that police inefficiency, lack of professionalism and brutality have become the new order of the day and this must end.

“FIDA commends strong, determined and courageous young people for their principles and resistance to police brutality and for their perseverance and commitment to the cause despite the dissolution of the Special Anti-Theft Squad (SARS) by the Inspector General of Police.

“The protests have continued because the fundamental issues have not been adequately addressed. They must be addressed! “
