A statement issued at the end of a meeting of the National Emergency Executive Committee (NEC) of the Democratic National Congress (NDC) held on Monday, March 1, 2021.
The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Democratic National Congress (NDC) held an emergency meeting in Accra on Monday, March 1, 2021. The meeting discussed a wide range of pressing issues of national concern.
1. The meeting discussed, among other things, the ongoing investigation of the ministerial nominees and urged the NDC parliamentary group to be firm and resolute in its duties on the Nominating Committee. He urged them to reject the insincere apologies of some of the nominees at the Evaluation Committee sessions and hold them accountable for their actions and / or statements that violate the obligations imposed on public office holders by the 1992 Constitution.
2. Likewise, the CNE meeting noted with concern the clandestine activities of some security organizations that have embarked on the arbitrary and malicious arrest and detention of citizens for exercising their right to freedom of expression on social media. He urged Ghanaians to rise up against the progressive culture of silence and dictatorship that is imposing on the nation.
3. * NEC noted with alarm the letter written on behalf of the Ghana Judicial Service through their lawyers, [email protected] to some media that attempted to censor their duty to hold public institutions, including the courts, accountable for their actions. We note that the letter of the Judicial Service seeks to limit the right to freedom of expression and freedom of the press to mere praise of the Judiciary, even in the face of several unjust sentences from the Supreme Court. NEC maintains that the Judicial Service has no right or authority to threaten anyone, much less the media, for fulfilling their constitutional duties. There are clear procedures established in our laws to deal with specific violations of ethics and media laws. We view the letter from the Judicial Service as an affront to freedom of expression and freedom of the press that threatens the pillars of democracy that the people of Ghana have nurtured over the years. We condemn it in unequivocal terms and call on the Judicial Service to withdraw it without delay, as a sign of respect for the democratic culture of freedom of expression and freedom of the press. *
4. It is the expectation of the NEC, that good sense and love for the country will prevail and that the Akufo-Addo government and other state institutions will henceforth abort any plan to terrorize the citizens of Ghana with in order to repress dissent and stifle the demands of probity and responsibility enshrined in the 1992 constitution.
Finally, as Ghanaians await the Supreme Court’s verdict on the electoral petition, the NEC urges all NDC members and supporters to remain calm and determined. It is the NEC’s prayer that the Supreme Court defend and promote probity, accountability and transparency, and comply with the will of the people expressed on December 7, 2020 in its ruling on the matter. The party, for its part, will stop at nothing to rid the Electoral Commission led by Jean Mensah of its partisan biases and prejudices, and will guarantee transparency and fairness in national elections.
ISSUED ON ACCRA ON MARCH 1, 2021
Signed
Hon. JOHNSON ASIEDU-NKETIAH
GENERAL SECRETARY.
