Election data is safe and will be preserved – EC to NDC

The Electoral Commission (EC) has ensured that 2020 election data is secure and will be preserved against an allegation that the commission was deleting data.

In a press release issued on Friday, December 18, 2020, the EC said that it has taken note of allegations from the Democratic National Congress (NDC) that the Commission’s directive to deactivate Biometric Verification Devices (BVD) constitutes an illegality since the deactivation would destroy evidence related to verified voters for the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections.

“The Election Commission categorically affirms that these statements are FALSE,” he said.

“The Commission has carefully preserved and safeguarded all electronic and physical records and data related to the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections,” he added.

The EC explained that it was instructive to note that BVDs were only ACTIVATED prior to use for Elections as a safeguard to ensure that no one was verified prior to the start of Elections.

“Similarly, at the close of the surveys, BVDs were DISABLED to prevent any potential harm to people from being verified after the surveys close.”

He said that therefore the deactivation process is intended to preserve the sanctity of the verification data in the BVD and does NOT remove it. In fact, several copies of the verification data are kept in the BVD.

This was demonstrated during a meeting of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) held on Wednesday, December 2, 2020. The meeting was attended by representatives of the political parties, including Mr. Peter Boamah Otokunor (Deputy Secretary General) and Mr. Daniel Amartey (Deputy Director, Elections) of the NDC, Civil Society Organizations and Development Partners.

The EC said that BVD’s demonstration was motivated by a similar claim by the NDC that deactivation of BVDs would result in data loss.

“Therefore, it is regrettable that the NDC continues to be misleading,” he added.
