Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah says the Akufo-Addo administration is satisfied with the outcome of the 2020 presidential elections despite the narrow margin between the president-elect and his closest contender, John Dramani Mahama of the National Congress. Democratic.

According to Oppong Nkrumah, the margin of votes in favor of the incumbent president represents a significant number of people who still had confidence in the administration of the government led by Akufo-Addo despite certain difficult decisions they have had to make and consequent opposition that have faced from those decisions.

He cited the government’s stance on the anti-galamsey fight, as well as the financial sector clean-up that had affected various financial institutions, as some of the difficult decisions that had generated so much opposition towards the sitting government, leading to the narrow margin.

President-elect Akufo-Addo managed to get just over 500,000 more votes than John Dramani Mahama of the NDC.

“And that for us represents a significant margin of this new cohort, especially when juxtaposed with the fact that, heading into these elections, there were very strong organized groups of people who had been affected by some of the difficult decisions that has taken this administration. he had to take the bold announcement that they were going to organize coalitions to vote against this administration. “

He explained that these coalitions had indeed carried out their threats, as was seen in the recently concluded elections when they voted en masse against the PNP government.

“For the people involved in small-scale illegal mining, the ones in the Galamsey areas, they were pretty clear that if the president was even trying to fight it or while he was going through the process, he was fighting it, they were going to make sure they vote. against him.

“Check particularly the parliamentary results in what I would call the galamsey areas; Lend, Huni Valley and all those areas and you would see that true to the threat that was announced, ‘if you fight galamsey, we would fight you,’ you can extrapolate and see how that affected us in the galamsey areas, “he said.

He also mentioned the anger of those affected by the resolution of the financial sector and their demand for a 100% refund of their investments or else they will ensure that the administration led by Akufo-Addo lost the 2020 elections as a factor of the small margin.

“Let’s take the resolution from the financial sector, and in particular those from asset management companies, which boldly announced and asked their members, hundreds of thousands of them to vote against the administration to force the elections to a second round so that the government is forced to pay them 100%,

“You will recall that the government launched a payment program; banks, non-bank financial institutions and asset managers and they said around 50,000 per capita or so, and their call was that they pay for everything else now we will vote against it, ”he said.

He continued: “Now if you are a government, do you have a choice, do you break the bank because you want to win an election or do you keep fiscal responsibility looking at all your numbers?

“And you can check the number of people, I mean the banks alone had about 4.6 million customers, check the different categories. So if you have such a strong cohort that says if you don’t pay all the money, if you don’t bankrupt us now, we would vote against you, you can start to see its potential impact on margins. . “

According to Oppong Nkrumah, considering the strong opposition they faced before the elections, they were quite satisfied with the victory of the incumbent government.

“So we consider this to be a very good result at the end of the day because we didn’t have to go broke or succumb to some of these threats just because we wanted to win an election.

“And we believe that, on balance, the good people of Ghana have understood why the government has had to follow some of these decisions and steps and the following results have been good for Ghana,” he said.
