Election 2020: Greater Accra Has the Largest Voter Population

The Greater Accra region has the largest population of valid voters for the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections.

Of the total of 17,029,971 valid voters on the Register, the Region has 3,529,181, closely followed by the Ashanti Region, with 3,020,141 voters.

Dr. Bossman Eric Asare, Vice President in Charge of Corporate Services for the Election Commission (EC), revealed this in response to a question posed by Members of Parliament over the weekend.

The members of the Commission were invited by the Directorate of Parliament to report to the Chamber on the Commission’s preparation for the 2020 elections.

Present at the briefing were Ms. Jean Mensa, EC Chairperson, Mr. Samuel Tettey, Vice President of Operations, Mr. Kye Duodo, the Procurement Officer, and Mr. Henry Ashong, the Deputy Director of Finance.

Dr. Asare said that the Eastern Region had the third highest with 1,641,215 voters followed by the Central Region with 1,568,352 and the Western Region 1,187,566 valid voters.

The rest are Western North – 468,683, Volta -924,117, Oti – 358,552, Bono – 653,609, Ahafo – 316,938 and Bono East – 594,617.

The Savannah region has 298,402, Northern 1,050,015, North East 289,535, Upper East 659,309 and Upper West 469,739.

He said the exceptional list had a total of 14,002 people while the multiple lists had 18,619 people.

Ms Jean Mensa said the 2020 Voter Registration printing was underway and assured that it will be completed and distributed in time for the elections.

He said that an electronic copy of the register had been made available to all political parties.

Ballots were being printed at seven Accra printing presses, viz; Buck Press Ltd, Assembly Press, Fonstat Ltd, Innolink, Yasarko Ltd, Checkpoint Ltd and Acts Commercial Ltd, it said.

Ms. Mensa said that to ensure transparency, agents from all political parties and security officials were monitoring the processes at the printers.

Printing of the Results Collection Sheet for the Presidential and Parliamentary Elections, also known as the “Pink Sheets,” began on Sunday, November 8, he said.

The EC chairman said that the Commission had hired 233,632 temporary officials made up of tellers and their deputies, presiding officers, verification officers, name reference officers and Covid-19 ambassadors for the exercise.

EC Boss said that a comprehensive training program had been developed for each category of staff and that they would be equipped with the necessary skills to enable them to perform excellently.
