During the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections, a total of eight lives were lost, including three minors. They are Zakaria Samira, 12, Musah Fuseini, 14 Botwe Tackie, 16, Abdallah Ayarek, 18; Tajudeen Mohammed, 41, Dompreh Emmanuel, 36, and Abass Ibrahim, whose age was not stated.
About 15 other voters also received varying degrees of injuries, primarily from gunshots.
The Police Commissioner (COP), Isaac Ken Yeboah, Director General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, revealed them at a press conference to give an update on the situation on electoral violence.
He said that all the violence that was recorded in Tamale, Techiman, Odorkor, Ablekuma, Savelugu occurred after Election Day during the collation.
COP Yeboah reiterated that the Police will never protect anyone who promotes problems that come to their attention.
He said investigations were underway regarding those arrested, as well as to bring other perpetrators to register, and asked the public to assist the police in conducting further investigations.
He mentioned Duko Naa Mohammed Ahmed, Duko’s boss in the northern region as one of the detainees.
Among the items recovered are a Baretta pistol, with 13 rounds of ammunition, a Smith and Wesson pistol with nine rounds of ammunition, another 80 rounds of ammunition and a pump action pistol, pepper spray, BB cartridges, pocket knives, a AK 47 rifle, ballistic vest, ammunition for G3 rifle and two magazines loaded with 60 rounds of ammunition.
He mentioned that Geoffrey alias Wadaada, Emmanuel Geo-Nai, Reverend Esinam Robert Oforfor, Mawuko, Bruno and more than 30 other people are suspects already on trial.
He said they faced various charges, including causing unlawful harm, causing unlawful harm, illegal assembly, and murder.
