The Christian Council of Ghana, on behalf of all leaders of the Ecumenical Church in Ghana, pointed out that security agencies alone cannot cope with the insurgency in the Volta region.
According to the Christian body, the issue has taken a political turn, requiring the participation of the political class to intervene.
So far a total of 60 people have been arrested in connection with the recent riots.
The riots were caused by suspected members of the western Togo secessionist group.
Fifty-four of these suspects have been placed in preventive detention while the government intensifies security operations in the region to control the insurgency.
A statement issued by the Most Reverend Dr. Paul K Boafo, President of the Christian Council, on Monday, October 5, urged the government to constantly involve the heads and people of the Volta region in the way forward on this matter.
“The security breaches that these acts have become too common in Ghana and it is time they were eradicated.
“Some police stations have recently been attacked and many innocent Ghanaians have been killed, maimed and assaulted.
“We want to ask the government to urgently get all security services to declare war on violent crime, especially armed robbery, and to eradicate it from our society,” the statement said.
He added: “The current issue of the call for secession in the Volta Region is substantially political. Security operations alone will be insufficient to address it adequately. We pledge our willingness to support the government to address the problem in a friendly manner. In this sense, we will support the government in the participation of the heads and peoples of the Region to achieve national cohesion.
“We want to call on all Ghanaians, especially the leaders, young people and people of the communities in the eastern corridor of the country to remain calm in the face of provocation, to desist from being used to perpetrate the evil intentions of others and to safeguard the newbies. peace we enjoy in Ghana. “
