Presidential hopefuls who have been disqualified by the Electoral Commission (EC) will obtain a refund of their ¢ 100,000 presentation rights, the Commission announced.
The head of Public Relations for the Commission, Sylvia Annor, told JoyNews that this has become necessary as those applicants did not meet the Commission’s requirements.
“In this situation where applicants were unable to navigate, we have no alternative but to pay them back, but for those who can navigate, their money will be kept,” he said on Joy FM’s Top. History.
This comes after five of the 17 applicants who stood to compete in the 2020 presidential election were disqualified by the Commission.
All five: Kwesi Addae Odike, Kofi Koranteng, Marricke Kofi Gane, Kwasi Busumbru and Nana Agyenim Boateng were disqualified due to what the EC described as inconsistencies with their submission forms.
Their cases were concerned with allegations of forgery of signatures and the fabrication of endorsements that will be sent to the Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further investigation.
Sylvia Annor explained that the Commission had duly engaged the affected applicants on the issues raised before the decision was made against them.
However, he added that the Commission has not yet officially written to inform them of his disqualification, despite the public announcement.
“We have dialogued with them as a Commission at a certain level during the period because I want to believe that the five that were mentioned are aware of the issues that the EC was talking about,” he said.
He added that the Department of Criminal Investigations (CID) has been involved in the matter so that more investigations are carried out, insisting that there would be no room for appeals.
“We gave applicants a very long time in which they were given the opportunity to make amends. Now we have finished with that process and we are moving to the next stage which is voting.
“So there would be no opportunity to appeal,” he said.
The other 12 qualified candidates, on the other hand, will participate in the upcoming elections.
