The Electoral Commission (EC) will begin a voter transfer exercise from Tuesday, October 20, 2020 to Sunday, October 25, 2020.
The exercise in times gone by allowed registrants to transfer votes from one district to another before voting day, but this year’s exercise will be different.
Previously, whoever wishes to transfer his vote from one constituency to another must do so six months before the election.
But this year, due to the compilation of the new voter registration, it means there is not enough time for that unless the current IC is amended.
EC Director of Election Services Dr. Serebour Quarcoe told Citi News that only students and security services who registered outside of their jurisdiction will be able to participate in the exercise.
“By law, no less than 42 days to the elections, we should allow transfers. With the new CI 127, only students and security services outside of their jurisdiction can transfer. This will be done from the 20th to the 25th of this month. Once we are done with that, we have over two weeks to work on the final record. “
He indicated that the exercise will allow the commission to compile the final record that will be available to all political parties before November 11.
“All those who qualify to request a special vote, that is, the media, security services and EC officials, must submit the request on the 25th of this month. We will put these on the absentee voter list so that we have the actual polling station record for each of them. Then, the Electoral Commission will deliver the definitive registry to the political parties on November 11 ”.
The EC began compiling the new voter registration on Tuesday, June 30, 2020, and ended on Sunday, August 9, 2020.
The exercise, which was carried out in six phases, registered 16,963,306 people in the new electoral roll.
