The Electoral Commission (EC) has reacted to reports that its president, Jean Mensa, has traveled out of the country following the declaration of the results of the 2020 presidential elections.
The President of the EC on Wednesday, December 9, 2020 declared President Nana Akufo-Addo as the winner of the 2020 presidential elections.
Following the statement, the EC has made some corrections to the percentages that Akufo-Addo and his main contender, John Mahama, both surveyed.
This has generated a lot of criticism for Jean Mensa and the Electoral Commission on social media.
On Friday, December 11, 2020, information began to circulate on social media that Ms. Mensa had traveled from Ghana to the United States.
The posts seem to suggest that the EC president vacated her post amid backlash from Ghanaians.
But in quick response, the EC has issued a statement stating that the information is false and adding that Jean Mensa and all the other commissioners were at the post.
“The attention of the Electoral Commission has been drawn to information circulating on social media stating that its president traveled outside the country after declaring the results of the 2020 presidential elections.
We wish to state that Ms. Jean Mensa, President of the Electoral Commission, as well as all the Commissioners are in office complying with their legally entrusted obligations.
“The public is therefore urged to ignore this fake news,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, the former president John Mahama has officially rejected the results of the 2020 presidential elections.
According to him, there were violations of the law that governs the elections and thus makes EC’s declaration amount to illegality.
The NDC presidential candidate, while addressing the media on Thursday, December 10, also listed a number of concerns he had about the general development of the elections.
