Some members of Parliament have expressed disappointment and anger at Ms Jean Mensah, chair of the Electoral Commission, for her inability to appear before the chamber on Thursday.

The day had passed into the afternoon at the House of Parliament in Accra, and the House had returned from the suspended session, in anticipation of the arrival of the chairman of the Election Commission, Jean Adukwei Mensa, for an update on the general elections of the December 7, 2020.

The spokesman, Professor Aaron Michael Oquaye, had forced the House to suspend it to allow more time for the arrival of the EC president, but the plenary returned without finding signs of her presence.

Meanwhile, the House has two days to adjourn the session on November 7, 2020, for members of Parliament who had won their primaries, go to their constituencies to participate in the last stage of the campaign for their parent parties or so that they themselves are re-elected.

The EC would update the Chamber on Thursday, November 5, 2020, the majority leader and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, had assured the deputies the day before.

But they returned from the suspension of the Chamber, and the president of the EC had not shown face.

Worried, the house turned; and it irritated the House leadership, because legislators felt that Dr. Mensa was showing what he called an “incessant display of disrespect” to the House.

Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, the head of the minority and deputy of the Asawase constituency, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak angrily wanted to know why the head of the EC was showing such an attitude towards the House.

She said that several invitations to the EC Presidency had been extended but that she had rejected all of them.

“We are allowing him to run us over; it’s not fair. We need you to tell us where it is. She cannot refuse to appear before us, … she must be summoned, “said Whip Minority Chief, adding:” She has constantly avoided this house.

“It is not fair that we allow this to continue, Mr. President, we must summon her to be here.”

Minority leader Haruna Iddrisu prayed to the president to summon the EC president in contempt of Parliament for failing to honor the invitation to appear before the House as scheduled on Thursday.

“I must express my deep disappointment at the inability of the President of the Electoral Commission or any of her deputies or any other member or management of our electoral process not to participate in this exercise that we are duly notified that they will be here. She must give reasons to the President why she should not be cited for contempt, “said Iddrisu.

First Vice President Joseph Osei Owusu, who is presiding, called for calm.

Meanwhile, a source close to the Leadership told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the EC had agreed to update the Chamber on Saturday, November 7, 2020 on the last leg of preparations for the 2020 elections.

“They are now ready to come to parliament to update lawmakers on preparations for Saturday’s elections,” the source said, adding that the invitation came quite late to the respondent.
