The Elections Director of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, has called it “criminal behavior” that the Ghana Election Commission has overprinted 151,000 ballots against its agreement with the various parties. politicians to come. from the December 7 polls.
“Sad to say this, but Jean Mensa and Bossman Asare… will destroy this country; they want to destroy our democracy; this is criminal behavior, ”Afriyie Ankrah told Kofi Oppong Asamoah on Monday, November 2, 2020 on the Class91.3FM Executive Breakfast Show.
According to an enraged Afriyie Ankrah, “In all previous elections, before the printing of the ballots, the Election Commission gives us what we call the statistics of the ballots; it is what gives us the number of ballots to be printed by region, constituency, district, voting station ”.
However, he alleged, “for this election, the EC refused [to give us the ballot statistics]”.
“We asked them several times, I personally hired them from Monday to Wednesday, we sent my director and another member of the team; they went to the EC several times, sometimes twice a day.
“On the one hand, they said that we should collect the statistics from the printing press ballots; on the other hand, they said they would give it to us.
“And this went on until the printing started and, as far as we’re concerned, all the other parties don’t have the ballot statistics; I do not know about the PNP but all the other minority parties that we know, we speak to them, they do not have the statistics of the ballots, “he said.
Continuing, he narrated: “So what we discovered was that they had printed more than 150,000 ballots; in fact, there are about 151,000 ballots, out of the extra five percent ”.
“But more seriously, at Assembly Press they have two facilities within the same location and we all agreed with them that the printing was going to be at one of the facilities so that our agents could be present to monitor.
“[On] At dawn on Saturday, around 1:30 am, our agents discovered that in the second location, within the same location, where they agreed that they were not going to print, they were printing and had printed hundreds of thousands of presidential ballots.
“Some guys raised the alarm, so at 2:30 am, we moved there to go find out, and it was actually true,” he said.
However, the EC Public Affairs Director, Ms. Sylvia Annoh, told Class News in an interview that the electoral management body is not doing anything illegal as claimed by the NDC.
“Depending on each scenario, for example, if you have an electoral college that has around 88, you should add five percent, but because of the numbers involved, in the hundreds, fifty, you need to strategize and make sure some can go a little above, but it does not mean that they do not have them in specific numbers, they have them in fifty, hundreds, it becomes very tight to the exact number, but that does not mean that we are only increasing the ballot. That has been the norm since time immemorial, ”he explained.
