EC approves 12 presidential candidates for the 2020 elections

The Electoral Commission (EC) has processed and authorized 12 presidential candidates to compete in the 2020 general elections.

They are; Alfred Walker; an independent candidate, President Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party (PNP), Christian Andrews; The Ghana Trade Union Movement (GUM), Brigitte Dzogbenuku; People’s Progressive Party (PPP), John Dramani Mahama; Democratic National Congress (NDC).

The others include; Akua Donkor; Ghana Freedom Party, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings; National Democratic Party (NDP), Hassan Ayariga; The entire People’s Congress, Ivor Kobina Greenstreet; Congress of the Peoples of the Convention (CPP), Kofi Akpaloo; Liberal Party of Ghana, David Apasera; National People’s Convention (PNC) and Henry Herbert Lartey; Great Consolidated People’s Party (GCPP).

Of the total of 17 applicants who submitted their nomination forms to be considered presidential candidates, the Commission disqualified five of them.

The candidates affected include independent candidates Kofi Koranteng, Marricke Kofi Gane, Akwasi Odike of the United Progressive Party (UPP), Kwesi Busumburu of the National People’s Party (PNP) and Agyenim Boateng of the United Front Party (UFP).

Their cases were concerned with allegations of forgery of signatures and the fabrication of endorsements that will be sent to the Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further investigation.

Addressing the media, CE President Jean Mensa stressed that his decision was based on the verification and authentication reports he received from his technical team.

Meanwhile, the EC indicated that the ¢ 100,000 filing fee will be reimbursed to all disqualified applicants in accordance with the rules surrounding the process.
