The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) says it is stepping up its inspection and enforcement operations in hotels and apartments across the country during the Easter festivities and called for the cooperation of all stakeholders.

“This intensified operation is in line with various strategies aligned by the Service to ensure that the Easter holidays are free of criminal activities that may harm the peace and security of the citizenry,” the GIS said in a statement on Friday. .

The statement, signed by Superintendent Michael Amoako-Atta, Head of Public Affairs, and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra, reminded owners and owners of habitable apartments of the requirement of Section 52 (1) (b) of the Immigration Law. 573 that required them to ensure that all guests within their premises were documented as non-Ghanaian.

Article 52 (1) (b) of the Act establishes that “a person who, knowingly, harbors any person who he knows is going to be deported or has reasonable grounds to believe that he has acted in violation of this Act, commits offense and is liable, on conviction, for a fine not to exceed one thousand Ghana cedis or a prison sentence for a period not exceeding two years or both. “

“The Service wishes to reiterate its previous call to landlords to require proof of legal residence or stay and immigration registration of non-Ghanaian tenants before entering into any lease agreement with them,” he noted.

The statement warned property owners and owners that obstructing or preventing a GIS officer from fulfilling his legal duty was a crime under Immigration Law.

He asked hoteliers and residential apartment owners to maintain adequate data on all guests within their facilities and to make them available to Service officials who would visit their facilities.

“Failure to provide such information is a violation of immigration laws and, upon conviction, two years in prison can be imposed,” the statement said.

“In line with this, carriers across the country, especially those within border communities, are cautioned to desist from transporting irregular migrants entering the country via unapproved routes to various locations within the country.”

He said such acts were crimes under Ghanaian immigration laws and that any captured carrier would be dealt with.

Bus terminals and public transport stations, according to the statement, will be closely monitored during the period.

He called on the public to cooperate with GIS officials by providing timely information on all suspicious movements of unknown persons within their communities.

“In keeping with its vision of providing excellence in security and migration management for national development, the Service will not waver in its mandate to ensure that the country’s territorial integrity is protected and will also support the guarantee of conducive internal security. for the people of Ghana, ”it said.
