The visibly shocked tech reporter started waving once he realized he had been let in.
“Do you know that you’ve been jumping into a secret conference?” Said the EU’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell.
“Yes Yes. Sorry. I am a journalist from Holland. Sorry to interrupt your lecture”, replied Verlaan, amid laughter from the officials. “I will leave here.”
“You know it’s a crime, huh?” Mr Borrell replied. “You’d better log off quickly before the police arrive.”

Verlaan gained access to the meeting after Dutch Defense Minister Ank Bijleveld tweeted a photo containing the login address and part of the PIN code.
“After several attempts, RTL Nieuws managed to guess the PIN code of the secret consultation, because five of the six digits of the pin code were visible in the photo,” said the media outlet.
While many have seen the funny side of the trick, it raises serious questions about the safety of confidential EU meetings.
The meeting ended due to the violation, while a Foreign Affairs Council spokesperson told RTL: “Such violation is illegal and will be reported to the authorities.”
A spokesman for the Dutch Defense Ministry said that tweeting the login details had been a “stupid mistake”.
“This shows how careful you have to be careful when submitting a meeting image,” they added.
