The Central Regional Police Command detained a 50-year-old driver for running over one of his officers at a checkpoint in Apam.

In an interview with JoyNews, Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) DSP Irene Serwaa Opong said that Francis Akese, who was driving a KIA truck with registration number CR 319-11, lost concentration while driving.

This, he said, caused him to shoot down Sgt Salihu Hifzullar, 39, who was on duty.

The incident that occurred Saturday at the Greenfields Quick Check at Mankessim-Apam seriously injured the officer.

However, Sergeant Hifzullar died while receiving treatment at Apam Catholic Hospital.

Earlier this year, a police officer from the Legon Motorized Traffic and Transport Directorate (MTTD) died after being run over by the driver of a commercial vehicle, popularly known as a ‘trotro’.

Sergeant Moses Appiah was reportedly pronounced dead at Military Hospital 37, where he was sent for treatment after the incident.

Eyewitnesses at the scene said the driver ran over the officer when he stopped in front of his bus in an attempt to avoid arrest.
