Former Borussia Dortmund head scout Sven Mislintat claimed the club tried to sign Kylian Mbappé on a free transfer while the Frenchman was in Monaco.
A teenage Mbappé made his debut for Monaco in December 2015 and scored his first goal in February 2016, breaking Thierry Henry’s records as the youngest to do both at the club.
Hence, he was one of the most coveted prospects in European football, with several continental giants, including Dortmund, lining up to sign him for free.
Although he finally signed a three-year pro contract at the Stade Louis II in March, Mislintat revealed how close the German team came to catching the wonder boy for nothing.
And the former head of recruiting for Arsenal told the Kicker Meet DAZN podcast: “ It was a real shame we couldn’t get Kylian in.
‘Kylian Mbappé was [available] free at one point and there were many suitors. But we had no chance of winning that [race].
“If you could have robbed Mbappe of Monaco for free at that time, of course it would have been a great deal.”
Mbappé burst onto the scene the following season, scoring 26 goals in 44 games to help Monaco win Ligue 1 and reach the Champions League semi-finals under Leonardo Jardim.
Paris Saint-Germain made him the second most expensive signing of all time and have rewarded him with 120 goals in 160 games, with 30 goals in all competitions so far this season, including a hat-trick in a 4 – 1 Barcelona win.
The 41-time international also won a World Cup with France and played yesterday in his country’s 2-0 standings against Kazakhstan, although his penalty was blocked in the second half.
Next for his club, on April 3 he will face Lille for the title, which is currently second in the table, behind only Mauricio Pochettino’s team on goal difference.
Four days after that, he will hope to play in the Parisians’ Champions League quarter-final first leg at Bayern Munich in a replay of last season’s final.
